Inaugural Kai Tak Water Sports Demonstration

Inaugural Kai Tak Water Sports Demonstration

With the cooperation of various Government departments, Hong Kong China Dragon Boat Association has participated in a trial event for canoeing, dragon boating and rowing using the Kwun Tong Typhoon Shelter and Kai Tak Approach Channel organized by the Hong Kong Water Sports Council (HKWSC).

Nearly 200 athletes and volunteers took part in the trial, which was aimed at demonstrating the suitability of this area for the development of active water sports in Hong Kong.

HKWSC Vice Chairmen, Raymond Ma and Mike Tanner were excited at the prospects the trial had opened up for the use of Kai Tak.  The Demonstration Day activity comprised teams from each of the three sports taking to the water and paddling around the typhoon shelter, which is currently undergoing remediation work to improve the water quality. The response from all participants was universally enthusiastic, with a post-event survey showing almost unanimous support for establishing a water sports centre here.

With the Government already committed to building the Kai Tak Multi-Purpose Stadium nearby as well as the Tseung Kwan O Water Sports Centre, HKCDBA and HKWSC are confident that a strong case can be made for the water sports centre, which would make full use of the existing water body for community sport development!
